Call For Papers
Breaking Ground and Building Bridges: Communication, Gender, and Social Change in Global Communities
February 14 -15, 2014
Ohio University Baker Student Center
The Women’s and Gender Studies Graduate Student Association at
Ohio University, in collaboration with the Communication and Development
Student Association, are pleased to invite you to take part in our first
graduate student conference. The
conference will focus on gender and social change in a global context,
highlighting the ways that activists and academics are both breaking ground and building bridges across a number of themes. We envision the conference as an opportunity
not only to highlight emerging scholarship in the fields of gender,
communication, and development, but also as a venue to open avenues of
conversation between people working in various disciplines both within and
outside of the academy around these issues.
We would be pleased to have your participation in our founding
conference.
This year’s conference will include a keynote speech by Dr.
Richa Nagar, Professor of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies at the University
of Minnesota. Writing in English, Hindi, and Awadhi as a scholar, creative writer,
theatre-worker and grassroots co-organizer, Dr. Nagar has authored more than
100 articles, essays, stories, plays, and poems. Her co-authored books
include Sangtin Yatra (Sangtin,
2004), Playing with Fire (University
of Minnesota Press and Zubaan, 2006), A
World of Difference: Encountering and Contesting Development (Guilford,
2009), and Ek Aur Neemsaar (Rajkamal
Prakashan, 2012). She has also
co-edited Critical Transnational
Feminist Praxis (SUNY Press, 2010).
We invite submissions addressing gender, communication, development, and social change in a
global context from across disciplines.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
·
Communicating messages of gender
and change in a global context
·
The interplay between
institutional structures and grassroots social change
·
Men and masculinities in gender
and development
·
LGBTQ communities and movements in
the global arena
·
Gender, sexuality, and human
rights in a global context
·
Communication and development in
the context of gender and sexuality (including media discourses of gender and
sexuality)
·
Gender, environmental
sustainability, and globalization
While we aspire to highlight graduate and undergraduate
student scholarship at this conference, we also welcome submissions from
faculty, activists, and development practitioners. We welcome proposals in the form of
individual presentations, panels, roundtables, art and performances, and
workshops.
If you
are interested in participating, please submit an abstract of a maximum of 250
words and a short statement about yourself to OU.WGSP.Conference@gmail.com.
Submissions are due by December 1, 2013.
If you will need any AV equipment or
specific accommodation for your presentation, be sure to mention it in the
e-mail. We look forward to your
contributions!
